Thematic & synthesis modes

The R3M platform offers specialized display modes—Thematic and Synthesis—to help you analyze emotional activation at different levels of detail. These modes allow you to focus on broad emotional territories or get a high-level summary of results, making it easier to draw actionable insights from your data.

Thematic mode

What is thematic mode?

  • Thematic Mode groups individual words into broader emotional or functional themes (e.g., “freshness,” “comfort,” “naturalness”).
  • Instead of showing every single word, cards display aggregated thematic blocks, making it easier to identify which emotional territories are most strongly associated with each stimulus.

How to activate

  • Go to Dashboard Settings (top-right menu).
  • In the General tab, activate Thematic Mode.
  • Optionally, enable Group by Themes to display cards with thematic word groups in ascending order by default.
  • You can also use Align Blocks to ensure all cards display thematic blocks in the same order and alignment, which is especially helpful when comparing multiple stimuli.

When to use

  • When you want to see the “big picture” of emotional response.
  • Useful for presentations or reports that require a high-level overview.

Synthesis mode

What is synthesis mode?

  • Synthesis Mode provides a summary view of the R3M scores and key indicators (such as % Lovers and % Rejectors) for each stimulus.
  • Word-level details are hidden, allowing you to focus on overall emotional activation and key metrics.

Features

  • Displays only the total R3M score and percentages of Lovers/Rejectors.
  • Shows the distribution of additional questions or filters (if included in your data), such as satisfaction or demographic splits.
  • Enables quick comparisons across stimuli or subgroups.

How to activate

  • Go to Dashboard Settings (top-right menu).
  • In the General tab, select Synthesis Mode.

Additional options

  • Sorting: In both modes, you can sort cards by name, score, base, or other metrics.
  • Saving preferences: Save your preferred mode and settings so they load by default each time you access the dashboard.
tip

Use thematic mode for high-level emotional territory mapping, and synthesis mode for concise summaries and quick comparisons. Switch back to normal mode for deep dives into word-level insights.
